Buy a Georgia State University diploma. Order a Georgia State University degree. Former President and current Republican presidential candidate Donald Trump claimed during a rally at Georgia State University on Saturday that he “saved” Clark Atlanta University, but Clark Atlanta University quickly responded on social media to refute the claim that the university needed to be saved.
At the rally, Trump invited Michaelah Montgomery, a Clark Atlanta University alumna and conservative activist. Trump told the crowd how he first met her at a restaurant earlier this year, and he said she thanked him for providing federal COVID-19 relief funds to historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) during the pandemic. “She looked at me and said, ‘This is President Trump. You saved my university.’ I said, ‘How did you know that?’ … This person is so smart and so sharp,” Trump said at the rally.
After the rally, Clark Atlanta University responded to Trump and Montgomery’s claims on Instagram.
The statement said: “Among our country’s more than 4,000 higher education institutions, many multinational companies, hospitals and other institutions have benefited from bipartisan support during former President Trump’s term and received CARES and HEERF funds. Clark Atlanta University is grateful for this support, but was not ‘saved’ by the pandemic relief funds.”
The post went on to add that Clark Atlanta University, like all other historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs), “remains committed to the mission of student success and continues to provide support at all levels of democracy.”
The remarks made by Trump at the rally came at a time when he was under scrutiny for his remarks about the racial identity of Vice President Kamala Harris.
At the National Association of Black Journalists (NABJ) convention in Chicago on the afternoon of July 31, local time, Trump questioned Harris’ minority status, describing the other party as being able to publicly change her race because of the election. Trump said, “I’ve known her for a long time, but only indirectly. She has always been of Indian descent, and she only promotes her Indian descent. I didn’t know she was black until she suddenly became black a few years ago. Now she wants to be called black. So I don’t know if she is Indian or black?”
One of the event hosts, Rachel Scott of ABC, emphasized that Harris has always considered herself black and attended a traditionally black university. But Trump ignored it and continued, “I respect either of them, but she obviously doesn’t. Because she has always been Indian, and then suddenly she became a black person. I think someone should investigate this matter.”
Trump’s words implied that Harris suddenly decided to “become black” in order to seek political benefits, accusing her of misleading voters on racial issues. This remark quickly attracted a counterattack from Harris and condemnation from a White House spokesman.
According to US media reports, Harris’ mother is from India and her father is from Jamaica. Both are American immigrants. Harris was born in California.
