What are the benefits of merging the two universities?
Financially, the merged university is expected to lose €1.2 million from its 2022 budget, which will be redistributed to other universities within the Walloon-Brussels Federation. Of course, there are gains as well as losses. “We recognize the significant benefits the merger can bring,” insisted Pierre Jadoul, Rector of Saint-Louis University Brussels. “In terms of deployment, strengthening the new KU Leuven’s presence in Brussels is very important. From Saint-Louis University’s perspective, the main purpose of the merger is to adapt to a broader scope. As a small university, we are subject to the same constraints as larger universities, namely the costs of IT development, administrative burdens, etc.”
In the future, all students, researchers, and faculty of the merged new KU Leuven will have access to a wider international network, particularly the European Union network currently enjoyed by the new KU Leuven, which aims to promote student mobility, not just the Erasmus exchange program. Other aspects include computer systems and shared learning programs, gradual coordination between different departments, and the aggregation of tools, particularly those deployed in the new Leuven Learning Labs designed to train teaching staff. “In the context of European competition, despite reduced funding per student, we must ensure that we maintain or even improve the quality we offer, and that is the purpose of this merger,” the two rectors concluded.
